Dear Parents and Guardians,
I am writing this letter to update you on Lin-Wood Elementary School’s School In Need of Improvement (SINI) status. Lin-Wood first became a SINI school in 2008 after not making “Adequate Yearly Progress” (AYP), as defined by the New Hampshire of Education (NH DOE) and the United States Department of Education (US DOE), for 2 consecutive years in reading and math. Since that time, Lin-Wood has achieved AYP in reading, and, also achieved AYP in math for the 2009-2010 school year (tested fall 2010). However, this is not enough to remove Lin-Wood from the SINI school list. To be removed all sub-groups must achieve AYP for two consecutive years. We made AYP for the third year in Reading and for the first year in Math. We need to make AYP one more year in Math as well as Reading to be removed from the list. We are now listed as remaining a SINI school, year two, in Mathematics for the 2011-2012 school year.

All Title I SINI schools are required to offer a school choice option, however there is no choice option available to Lin-Wood students. We will have a Supplemental Education Service (SES) available for the 2011-2012 school year and information will be sent out as soon as the school identifies those students who will be eligible. This will be on a first come, first serve basis, so it will be important that you contact the school as soon as we notify you that SES is available.
To improve student performance, the elementary school has implemented a Response to Intervention model for Reading and has implemented a new mathematics series. The knowledge gained from using an RTI model for reading will be used for the mathematics curriculum. Four teachers have attended Math implementation training this summer specific to the series. Two other teachers also attended a train the trainer workshop for the math series and will be able to help the teachers implement the new text. Summer School was offered to students. We will continue this coming year to further improve our teaching.
Please review the SAU Title I Parent Involvement Policy that is in the Student Handbook for things that you can do to help to increase student achievement. There is also information on the school’s web site and the school’s newsletter. The school has developed an action plan with the help of state Title I funds to address the problem. Title I services are available to students who demonstrate the need for additional support and instruction in a particular subject area. This support is in addition to general classroom instruction and is not intended as a replacement.
As a participant in this program, your child has the opportunity to work in class and/or in small sessions outside of the classroom with me or one of our experienced staff members, building on skills and strategies with supplemental materials chosen specifically for him or her. Instruction will focus on supporting classroom lessons as well as lessons and activities to encourage academic growth in the student’s area(s) of concern. The overall goal is grade-level proficiency in all academic areas. In addition, Title I services aim to help your child gain confidence, increase skills necessary for effective communication and problem solving, and promote a lifelong love of learning.
Title I services will include additional assessments in order to better determine his/her more specific areas of need. Additionally, your child’s progress will be monitored periodically to ensure instruction matches your child’s need and that progress is being made.
